This was an AM receiver built by a team of 5 Junior engineering students for the Electronics I Lab section at LeTourneau University. It receives on 550KHz and goes through an RF filter and amplifier, into a mixer with a local oscillator to mix it to the heterodyne frequency of 455KHz then passes through the envelope detector (demodulator) and then into the audio amplifier and to the speaker. It is being fed a signal from a computer fed through an AM modulator/arbitrary waveform generator since no local stations broadcast at 550KHz.

  • Yes, excessive for what it does, but it's designed that if you replaced a few components with tunable varieties you would have a fully tunable radio. We didn't do that with this one, but the rest of the design gave us experience on how one would do that. As part of the project we did have some limitations in that we couldn't use ICs(except for audio out amp), BJTs being the only part allowed other than basic circuit components.

  • please tell us how to make an Transistor AM radio very simple...we dont want IC like MK484 or ZN??? because its not avalible in our country ...we have 5 simple NPN transistors 2N3904... how can we amplify radio signals to drive a small speaker...please make a ten minute project on that..thanks

  • So, thats a single channel, one frequency - AM receiver at 550 khz? And all those things to do that? Wow...okay, different approach, excessive...but cool somehow, something new, haven't seen that.
