As an experienced farmer here is some advice. You should have intervened. Not sure if this baby survived but what was happening was a form of cannibalism. Mother hen was not helping the baby at all but trying to 'eat it'. Honest. If it happens again, remove the hatching chick until it hatches by itself. Good luck!
