Founded in 2003 by IowaStates College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods (CSRL) empowers people in developing countries to improve their quality of life in ways that can be sustained long-term. Presently, CSRL is directly assisting small scale farmer households in Kamuli, one of the poorer districts in Uganda. The goal is to help farmers achieve food and nutrition security and then diversified and secure incomes. Measurable impact in the lives of thousands of people associated with the program stems primarily from collaboration with two key Ugandan organizations that employ participatory methods to understand the people and their communities history and culture: Volunteer Efforts for Development Concerns (VEDCO) and MakerereUniversity. The intent is to remain in Uganda until sustainability is assured, then replicate the successful model in other developing countries or regions. We are able to fund these programs thanks to generous contributions and gifts. The pictures are apt. The transition from colorlessness to colour to intimate movements from poverty and food insecurity to development food security and hope is artistic, unique and true to many areas of Sub-Saharan Africa. This endeavour in Uganda receives a thumps up from me.
