The last moments of the analog signal of WGTE, Toledo, 2359 EST, Feb 17, 2009. Earlier the same day, they had taken the analog transmitter off its usual role of simulcasting the PBS programming seen on digital and satellite, and replaced it with programs about transition and warnings like the one shown here. The receiver is an Emerson 1224 24" (61cm) monochrome set, from circa 1958 (it predates WGTE itself). The set top box is a UHF converter, necessary since the set has only a VHF tuner.

  • "You are watching WGTE in Toleto"... not anymore apparently lol

  • Lol... thanks for the reply

It is interesting that this has had about 200 views yesterday and today, this shutoff actually happened on 2/17, the original "transition day", and was posted soon after.

  • It needs a converter to tune uhf analog. That thing is old school. Is it still original picture tube? If so, thats some good quality.

  • Not quite. Per a card left in the set by a TV repairman (the card long since lost), the original (24YP4, I think) was replaced by a 24AEP4 (no ion trap) in 1966 (which implies the original had a very short life!). My assumption is that the set has had relatively little use since (I got it in 1979 and in only about 3 years total has it been a daily watcher). If it goes unused for a few weeks, it takes several minutes after power on for the "silvery look" to go away.

  • Thank you. I am a native of Toledo, so this IS history worth recording.

BTW, does anyone have a cannon and a bunch of black powder? I want to give US NTSC broadcasting a 21 gun salute.

  • I plan to document as many of my local stations as I can later on tonight! <3

  • that is one beautiful set!

  • hehe you did it with a REALLY old TV, nice!
