I think it's for the same reason Joss Whedon broke up Angel and Buffy: happy endings are boring, or at least that's the prevailing theory in storytelling. There's a reason "happily ever after" comes at the END of those fairy tales. ;) That said, however, I want more happy endings, dammit!! Lol.
