When a drug addict is struggling against his cravings, he is balancing potential gains (pleasure) versus loss (consequences). Brain imaging studies will attempt to answer the question: is there a part of the brain that compares gains and losses, or several brain areas that compute gains and losses separately? Dr. Greg Berns of Emory University gives an overview.

You should always question the foundations of decision making, especially the big decisions. If its based on either a weakness, bad advice, or poor information, then it likely the decision will lead to loss. Since we don't normally live in a vacumn, even leaders have advisors - hopefully wise ones with good intentions.
