My personal top 10 list of the best moments of Wagner's Der Ring Des Nibelungen.

As the top 10 countdown nears its end, we arrive at number 3, and one of the most beautiful instrumental moments in all of Wagner. This part is a director's dream, as so much interpretive staging can go on, however the director wishes to go about it. As Hagen drowns trying to retrieve the ring, the Rhein Maidens' motif is played and developed. The apocalypse never sounded so beautiful.

The recording is Herbert Von Karajan's Ring, Götterdämmerung, recorded in 1966-70.

  • That last Valhalla leitmotiv is simply crushing in its awesomeness. Nothing beats Wagner's Ring, nothing! Thank you so much!

  • @PUREKING010 Only good? I'd say divine.

  • Wagner the PEAK of human musical creativity

  • What can be compared with wagner really?

  • Almost every orchestral movie soundtrack is contained in these less then five minutes bars.

  • @pmserrasilva Same here.

  • With beauty and cataclysm the wonder is worked that the world may be redeemed. Words fail to describe how Brunhilde moves me.

  • Here is a picky comment, but I am always disappointed in the tympani sounds on the Solti Ring. It is weak and lifeless. Berlin's tympanist, and HVK's use of it is far superior. And I also feel the HVK Ring doesn't get due credit. Solti's Gotterdammerung cast was superb, but he other operas are weaker than the Von Karajan versions- to me anyway.

  • This very, very great performance of Karajan! The climax of maybe all music!!

  • for me this is THE moment of the entire Ring!
