Glenn Gould plays Strauss "Beim Schlafengehen" (the third of the Vier Letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs)) with soprano Lois Marshall.

Text:

German:
Nun der Tag mich müd' gemacht,
soll mein sehnliches Verlangen
freundlich die gestirnte Nacht
wie ein müdes Kind empfangen.

Hände, laßt von allem Tun,
Stirn, vergiß du alles Denken,
alle meine Sinne nun
wollen sich in Schlummer senken.

Und die Seele unbewacht,
will in freien Flügen schweben,
um im Zauberkreis der Nacht
tief und tausendfach zu leben.

English:
Now I am wearied of the day;
all my ardent desires shall
gladly succumb to the starry night
like a sleepy child.

Hands, stop all your work;
brow, forget all your thoughts;
all my being now
yearns to sink into sleep.

And my unguided spirit
wishes to fly up freely
into night's magic sphere
to live deeply and thousandfold.

Further info on this recording from user twolegsnotail:

According to'Wondrous Strange': "His [Gould's] third program, Richard Strauss: A Personal View, broadcast in October 1962, was a sort of replay of his all-Strauss Stratford concert of the previous year, and once again his performances, including the first movement of the Violin Sonata (with Schumsky), songs with Lois Marshall,and music from the Bourgeois gentilhomme Suite,illustrated a polemical defence of Strauss' style."

Thank you for this helpful information, twolegsnotail!

  • Of great archival interest but not even GG can replace an orchestra in this voice/orchestra masterwork.The voice must grow out of the orchestra and the intended effect does not work without one.

  • and the other three? incredible...thank you

  • @buggerationable fake emotions? not for me!

  • da rimanerci secchi !!!!

  • Lois Marshall, la mejor versión que anda por youtube, una maravilla porque se recrea en cada palabra y frase....exagerando los momentos culmines y endulzando los mas sentimentales. Maravillosa.

  • trying to enjoy this on the piano is like trying to enjoy Monet while being color-blind. I love Gould at 2:13, "are they watching ME yet?!". Long live Gould and the new audiences he continues to find!

  • offcourse glenn gould is legendary!

  • now, i must say, i do not like this at all... too much fake emotions

  • Gorgeous Soprano with the best accompanist!

  • What a beautiful version and i had never heard of the singer.Thank you for posting.
