"What is the Best Ceramic Tile for Outdoor Patios?"
Mark Millstine of Molyneaux Tile Carpet Wood, Pittsburgh, PA, explains that no glazed ceramic tile should be used outdoors in a northern climate like Pittsburgh with wide temperature variations. This is because the glazing, which is essentially a thin layer of glass baked onto the top of the tile, will eventually crack under freeze / thaw conditions.

  • Thanks for the info. We are very perticular when it comes to installing products indoors or outdoors. We are recommending the safest way, but thanks again for the additional info.

  • Anything with a moisture level of 3% or less. Porcelain (which is impervious, not vitreous) is not needed. Glazed tile is not excluded from this criteria. Quarry tile will also be just fine. Membranes are not mandatory, cement grout will be just fine.

  • What would you recommend for western Pennsylvania?

  • This is completely inaccurate information from start to finish.
