Due to low achievement in reading and math, Forest Grove High School, the only high school in a small town in Oregon, hired a new principal in 2002. Transforming the school culture was a priority, so Forest Grove implemented an award-winning small learning community program and increased its offerings in AP courses from eight to 20. By 2008-09, 78% of students met or exceeded proficiency in reading, 83% met or exceeded proficiency in math. In both subjects Forest Grove students are outperforming their peers at the district and state levels.
