The stars stand for the three grand divisions,so stated the man who designed the flag.

I'm a bit late with my comment here, but better late than never, eh? I clearly recall reading in a World Book Encyclopedia published sometime in the 1960s that the 3 stars represent the 3 grand divisions, the 3 major rivers (Cumberland, Tennessee, and Iforgot Rivers), and the 3 presidents. As an aside, Polk was the best president we've had. They Might Be Giants even have a song praising him.

I didn't know Tennessee had three divisions. Thanks for educating me joe.

Googling the Tennessee state flag gives multiple reasons for the stars. Mine is still the primary one, although there are others, none of them corresponding to your description.
Uh oh, Cardinal fan! I guess I can get over it though, because you inspired me to look up what Chicago's municipal flag represented. And I have a new respect for the lawnmowers of Tennessee!

The thing that makes it odder, is that I've tried to ask people if there is community pressure to keep their lawns mowed to the extreme degree they do, and they don't understand my question. Maybe I'll take the video out to show what I'm talking about. Lawn mowing season is over, though, but maybe I can still make a point, visually.
