Daniel Roth Improvises @ Wanamakers, Part one. Big long file so I had to divide it into 2 parts.

  • This is clearly not an improvisation, but a composition. I would like to know what it is though. Very nice.

  • @MrDecanialto It is an improv, he was given a sheet of music to improv. from. He did not know what it was going to be, it was a total surprise. It was done as part of an old tradition.

  • @Tom1980nj Looks like he's reading a large score to me. Are you sure it isn't an orchestral transcription? It just sounds far to nice to be an Improv. if you know what I mean.

  • @MrDecanialto He was given it in a sealed envelope during the recital, and no one but the people who picked it knew what was inside.

  • Is that Jon Ortloff acting as registrant/page turner/assistant to Mssr. Roth?

  • @Fozzymaple No idea.

  • @MrDecanialto I think that the scores that you see on the music desk were for the other pieces that he played - the fact that is sounds "far too nice" to be an improvisation is just and indication of how good M, Roth is at what he does - even if this doesn't quite equal Dupré's 1924 improvisation at Wanamakers that ultimately became the Symphonie Passion ...

  • @Tom1980nj That doesn't make it an improv, playing it for the first time would simply make it playing prima vista.

  • Is Mssr. Roth improvising on any specific theme?

  • Thanks for taking the time to upload these fine noodlings by a master on a grand instrument ,an orchestra at his fingertips . Incidentally , be bop is a fine form of jazz for improvisation ,too. It never was accepted as a popular music nor successfully played in the streets by surviving musicians . The tendancy of comments to be critical on Youtube is unfortunate, especially when it is off topic. Thanks again for sharing this interesting musical experience you were close enough to record for us.
