Here is one of the greatest and earliest shooters on the SNES, Biometal. With some bizarre story about half-biological cybernetic aliens aside, this game absolutely rules.
One notable thing to point out is the game's soundtrack. For the US and European versions of the game, the soundtrack was done entirely by 2 Unlimited, the techno group well popularized by tunes like, "Get Ready For This" and "Twilight Zone." The Japanese version has a totally different soundtrack, i.e., it's totally lame.
This game has some insane graphical features for its time, including some stock Mode 7 tricks among others. Also, the sheer number of enemies and bullets on screen really set the stage for complicated shooters to come. More than just the classic flying shooter style of Raiden and Darius, Biometal has a shield mechanic that you can toss at your enemies depending on motions on the d-pad. All in all, it's really deep and really unique.
