@physphilmusic Good point, but I'm talking more about the style in general more than the individuals. Gaga is a mere example. Sweeping musical hierarchies are what are bullshit. So what if pop music doesn't have non-retrogradable rhythm or compositional techniques from the Medieval period? I'm not trying to be angry by the way. I just want people to stop taking sides.

@tykun101 Look, it's perfectly OK to say that Lady Gaga and her music has some merits totally different from Messiaen, but it's totally bullshit to say that she is as great as Messiaen. It takes years of training, searching, and thinking to eventually culminate in something like this 1-hour piece. It takes comparatively nothing to produce a Lady Gaga, other than looks, a moderate amount of singing talent, a team of good engineers & producers, and luck!

Messiaen is great. Gaga is great. It demonstrates ignorance to trash any music whatsoever. Gaga is not trying to make profound world-changing music; she's trying to make FUN dance music, and there's not a thing wrong with that, idiots. Granted, Messiaen was a genius; he made something quite excellent with the pitch-class set theory system. This would have been quite a quirky piece to hear in the concentration camp! And thank goodness he was allowed to compose.

I would like to ask where Lady Gaga enters into Messiaen's work?? Can we just enjoy this piece here?!
I would like to point out the fact that Messiaen wrote this while imprisoned in a Nazi camp during World War II. A guard sympathized with him and let him perform it with the instruments they could find in camp. That's why the instrumentation seems random. Messiaen did a very good job!
