  • What would your advice be to someone who's just starting on the HD and wants to learn this style and improvisation? I'm making my way through chords, but I'm not improving a lot.

  • @hypernika0 My main advice would be to have patience. It takes time to get better and it sure doesn't happen over night. You have to have a clear view of where you want to be and then take little steps to get there. I know that all may sound generic but it's how I made it and you can too. I also know that with an instrument it can get really frustrating when you don't seem to be making much progress. Just be patient with yourself and it will come. Keep listening to other HD players too.

  • What type of Dusty Strings is that and who makes your hammers? I will be getting a Nic Hambas 17/16/4/4 in a month or 2 and I would like to know if it has a big enough range to play this song.

  • My DS is their new D650, and the hammers I have are Ed Hale hammers. The only other hammers that I would like to get are Bob Bedard. They're beautiful and I think they're just as light as light as my Ed Hale. I would think that your new dulcimer would have the range to play this. 17/16 I 'm sure would have the high Bb. That's really the only note needed to play this song as written.

    Thanks, Ted

  • @tedlavonyoder Oh cool, I just realized that you are fairly close by, I just moved to SW Michigan for grad school. I'll make sure to make it out to one of your concerts

  • @tedlavonyoder Thanks for the encouragement, I know instruments take time and I'm OK with that. My issue more than anything else is that I don't really understand how to get there. I've been playing chords and have no idea where to go from here. Do you have any books that you would recommend, or just pick up a music theory book and try to apply it to the Dulcimer. Again, thanks for the insight, your the man.

  • Agreed. You should play the entire song :)

  • Cool! But I think you should post a video of the whole song all at once!

  • Thank you for the information. I got to try out a pair of Ed Hale Cherry Hammers at a dulcimer store here in ohio 2 months ago and I forgot the name of the builder. The Ed Hale hammers are alot heavier than the previous hammers I had. I prefer the heavy ones because the light ones fly all over the place when I play and I end up hitting the wrong note.
