I'm playing the Liir in this particular game. Sword of the Stars, for the most part, is a Turn-Based strategy game with some role-playing elements tied in. However, combat is real-time, but you don't really control your ships, but rather just give commands to them.

Before anyone says anything, the way I play against AI and other players is different. If its just the AI, I'll just send all ships attacking one particular ship that I find the most threatening. Against other players will vary.. I don't want people telling me how to play this game, I already suck as it is.

Anyway... when researching Artificial Intelligence.... there is a chance that the AI will rebel against you and I believe a random amount of planets will end up being rebels against you. These are a pain to get rid of, and if you don't research AI Virus and then AI Slaves, you will have issues later on (especially if you can't even research the Virus itself in the least) Slaves will slowly cripple AI ships over time. This takes a long time to see any noticeable effects, but it will also allow you to regain control over the AI to give back its benefits. (the virus alone doesn't give the benefits)

I'll have other videos along the way with various races. The only two I will refuse right now are Humans and Zuul. Here are the reasons:

Humans: Their node links are annoying as hell to deal with when you're wanting to either explore or get to somewhere. You're just lucky if you find a node-link to a particular planet or not.
Zuul: This is by far the toughest race to play as. They're constant overharvest rate slowly degrades planets and you have to constantly mine other planets to get the resources you need. This adds on to the fact that you need slaves as well, and their node links degrade over time. Only extreme players should play this race.

It is true that each race has their ups and downs. In terms of play-style, Tarkas, Liir, and Morrigi each have similar playing style, but their combat sets them apart to some degree. Humans have their node-links, Zuul with their node-space, and the Hiver with their gates.

Me personally.. I love the Liir and Morrigi. Both have very good point-defense and offensive weapons. Tarkas have good offensive forward, but their point defense lacks at the front and is only on the sides and rear. Hiver are pretty descent all around, but they are a bit more powerful at the front but still have room for point defense. Zuul have little point-defense that I'm aware and are really all about power. Humans are more of an all-around kind of thing with descent power and weaponry.

Anyway, expect more at some point later on in the following couple weeks.

One last bit of info. This was played on an Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz CPU, ATI Radeon HD3870 GPU PCI-e 2.0. Load time is descent for the amount of ships, but it is somewhat long. I didn't feel like cutting it out.

  • I wonder why battles vs AI rebels always take so long to load up...

  • @GenericOverusedName That's more the fact that I have a crapton amount of ships actually. I meant to knock out the loading screen, but kinda forgot.

  • @Almaravarion Yeah, for instance I typically avoid getting nano virus until after I've gotten all the AI techs I can get. Nano virus works amazingly well.

  • awesome music

  • by the way : Fun Fact :

if you aim at AI - DO NOT get all techs necesary to kill it off. Why ? AI when rebels gets your COMPLETE TECH TREE [as for - researched tech tree]

  • @Commodore - not quite, there is incredibly remote chance [close to 0% but still] as Zuul to get AI Slaves anyway, and I believe allies CAN help you research it as special project.

  • @khoid Actually AI Virus just kills the AI Rebellion, it does not restore your AI bonus. To get those back yiu have to research AI Slaves. It is alsopossible that you will research AI virus and AI Slaves will not be available, therefore eliminating AI bonuses for the rest of the game.

  • @ScionCrow I dont even have the game yet but i still know more about it :D

  • @Deamonkiller100 That's it. Damn, I haven't touched SOTS is so long I forgot most of the research.

  • @ScionCrow the other thing you meant was ai slaves i think cuz that reenables the ai bonuses
