This interesting-looking creepy-crawlie (Damon variegatus) is probably best known for its appearance in the movie "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" where it was portrayed as a lethal creature, and was tortured by a curse from Professor Moody.

In reality, it's quite harmless in spite of its scary-sounding names, which include "African Cave Spider", and "Tail-less Whip Scorpion". These critters live in east Africa and really do live in caves, where they eat mainly small insects.

Some more interesting info can be found here:

This specimen was filmed at the exhibit of Ken the Bug Guy during the 2010 Los Angeles History Museum's annual insect fair.

The music is "Darkness" from the "Digital Dreaming" CD by Technician (yours truly). Complete artist discography can be found at HTTP://technician.jcmdi.com

Enjoy the show!

  • Tanzanian Giant Tailless Whipscorpion (Damon variegatus) , not spider.

  • I did notice that it's called by several different names (as noted in the vid description) depending on who you talk to and what local common name is in use in the region... Either way, it's a cool critter :-) THanks for stopping by!

  • this spider was made when a spider and scorpion mixed ....Xd

  • It does look much like a strange hybrid! =) Thanks for checking it out!

  • @Adso90 It's possible that one of their natural behaviors, such as resting, may look like cuddling and that's how that saying came about. Don't know for sure though... maybe one of the other viewers might know something... (please do tell if so!) =)
