I've had my Mighty Mouse for several years and it has done this a few times (not scrolling up) and I have fixed it a couple ways including an alcohol dampened cloth and the method in this video just now for the first time. I did it for about a good minute and with firm pressure and out came a significant amount of lint. I don't think one would have to do this so often as to worry about the rubber coming off the wheel. Maybe wash your hands more:) But this does work well!

this works about 5 times.
then the rubber starts coming off the ball regarless of how much pressure you put on the ball. Why dont you just buy a real mouse? instead of the shitty apple mouse's that are really stupid and bad.

pretty sweet, totally work!

It works man. Thank you very much.

Wow. I can now scroll left again for the first time in 6 months.

Amazing! THANK YOU!

simple ideas are the best!! Worked right away!
this fucked up my mouse completely, and i had to get a new mouse, it works once or twice then it starts rubbing the rubber off the ball

Apparently you were using way too much force. I'm cleaning my mouse this way for almost 2 years now and no problem with the ball so far.

Why does everyone do it this way? It's takes a painfully long time and doesn't work that well xD
It's better to just get a bit of wet kitchen roll wipe the ball over a few times and dry on some dry kitchen roll, done in like 30 seconds and more effective :)

Because not everyone likes to put water inside the mouse? Although I can see advantages of your solution, I wouldn't do it this way myself. I've seen to many electronic devices smoked just by dusting them with wet towel.

It's just a sheet of regular printer paper.
