KEZI News interviews Eugene Costco Assistant Manager, local business owners and Costco members about the importance of buying locally produced products.

EUGENE, Ore.--When you're out grocery shopping you might not think you're buying local, but as it turns out you often are. All along the food aisles at this Costco store are loads of products made right here in Oregon.

"Eugenians love their Eugene products. I think it's more important, I feel, for our location to do our best to get those local businesses in here," says a Costco assistant manager.

The feeling is mutual for local artisans like Jeff Swanson, whose family has farmed the same land for five generations.

"It gives us tremendous exposure to a large number of customers. We are also able to sell a large amount of wine in a short period of time," says Swanson.

At a time when so much of what we buy comes from somewhere else, it's nice to know we can be smart consumers and know we are helping a local company or farm at the same time.

"Eugene is full of local artisans in the food culture, like Dave's Killer Bread. When we see that we're kind of like oh. Cuz we know that somebody made it here and they do have a true artisan background," says one shopper.

Many shoppers admit they don't specifically seek out Oregon products while out and about, but most likely they do it without even knowing it. Consider brands like Kettle Chips which are baked in Salem or dips stamped with Reser Fine Foods which are made in Beaverton.

"We're all about community, we're all about local, and from the community we spread out into the world and that's why we like to think local" says a Costco shopper.
