In the UK, you should take your shoes off in someone's house. If your in someone else's house, they would probably say "you can put your shoes over there" or something. I think it's the same in australia and new Zealand but I'm not sure

@dracorider i live in finland and here no one is wearing shoes inside houses (except in public places of course) my mom always wonders how americans can keep their floors and carpets clean :D I also think it feels more comfortable not to walk with shoes all the time (:
