At the end of summer 2009, the University stepped up its attacks on people working against budget cuts and for their jobs. While custodians continued to meet with students and with each other, management found increasingly creative ways to retaliate against workers, including scheduling meetings during planned rallies, putting workers on "administrative leave" in preparation for firings, isolating custodians who are strong organizers alone in far off buildings, and using police force to intimidate both students and workers. In September 2009, Democracy Insurgent held a picket against retaliation.
