I was blessed to visit the Monastery of the Virgin Mother "Panagia Soumela" in 2000 with my now wife. The trip started from Trapezounda (Northern Port of todays Turkey), the monastery situated 50klms soth from the city after the villages of Macka. I had a great friend "Maoumet" who drove us their with his Jeep, which, as you see in the video, did not make it all the way up. The true blessing however was to see all the SNOW which started as we got their (not on the drive up) and stopped once we left.

Its a must trip for anyone, Pontian or not, Christian or Not. After so many years the restoration (thanks to the intent to join UNESCO) is almost finished and the Monastery is back to it glory of pre- 1922 when it had the Orthodox munks and housed the miracale icon of the Virgin Mother (it is in the later built Sumela in Veria Greece now)...

I correct my comments, the Sumela Monastery is not yet on the UNESCO World Heritage List. However it is on their Tentative List. In order for it to go on the Heritage List Turkey is required to make a submission. However, it is in Turkeys gov best interest to maintain the site as it is a great revenue maker and unique attraction to the Trabzon region. My first visit saw 50 people entering every 30 min!!! $$

  • wow BEAUTIFUL monastery... I think there's some in mainland Greece that are built on the tops of cliffs, where supplies and people have to be pulled up on rope elevators :D cool eh?

  • Muslims of Pontic Greek origins, speakers of the Pontic language -Rumca, which is spoken by many people in Tonya, Maçka, Sürmene, Çaykara, and Dernekpazarı districts of Trabzon. The total number of the speakers may be guessed; roughly 250,000. Ömer Asan estimated the number of people of Pontian Greek descent in Turkey at about 300,000 in 1996 (see Pontos Kültürü). 5 minutes ago

  • Death marches through Turkey's mountainous terrain, forced labour in the infamous "Amele Taburu" in Anatolia and slaughter by the irregular bands of Topal Osman resulted in tens of thousands of Pontian Greeks perishing during the period from 1915 to 1922.

  • Like Armenians, Assyrians and other Ottoman Greeks, the Greeks of Pontus suffered ethnic cleansing at the beginning of the 20th century, first by the Young Turks and later by Kemalist forces
