A truly magnificent performance by Richard Burton. When I first saw this scene a few weeks ago when I watched the movie I had chills running down my spine. In complete honesty, if I were the subject of the excommunication in this situation I would be abasing myself the instant he drops the staff and begging for forgiveness! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful and powerful scene from a first rate film!

Is this at all an accurate theology of excommunication? Excommunication doesn't damn you by fiat. The Church has no authority to do that. I can see, in a qualified sense, the words of this character being accurate, but only in a VERY qualified sense. Those otherwise not familiar with how excommunications works will be very confused.

@sovercplusv Actually the Catholics who I know are those who don't have the massive arrogance to consider themselves somehow smarter than the 2,000 year old infallible Church, whose fathers, doctors, popes and saints have unanimously condemned abortion and contraception. There's no ambiguity to the Church's position. Either you accept the authority of the Church, and you denounce the evils which permeate this culture, or you deny the Church's authority, and you are not Catholic.

This scene absolutely terrified me when I was 14.  I never forgot it. They need to bring this practice back, of publicly excommunicating scandalous "Catholic" politicians and other prominent Catholic figures who cause grave scandal and harm.
