A quick motion diagram explaining how the Boulder Scene of Disneyland's "Indiana Jones Adventure" ride operates.

The vehicle enters a themed tunnel and pauses beneath Indiana Jones. A rolling boulder appears in the distance and the tunnel slides forwards along rails to suggest the vehicle is backing away from the threat.

As the tunnel slows again, the boulder continues the illusion by moving along its own rails towards the ride car.

The ride car finally drives down a hidden ramp once the boulder reaches the end of its movement to simulate a floor collapse.

- This was how my own model was supposed to operate too, had I found a way to combat friction on my drive chain. Thankfully the Disney Imagineers have a much better perfected version =)

  • How on earth does that work? I understand the mechanics, but how does something that seems that obvious work so well? That's genius.

  • @TheSpiralOrder

Well for the riders on board, as far as they are concerned they've parked the car right beneath Indy. Therefore subconsciously they know there is a road at that particular point.

When the car "backs up" and then returns to the same spot, but instead goes DOWN. It would seem as if the road that was previously there beneath Indy had caved through

  • thats exactly right because i rode it when a glitch happened and the walls and ball both quickly reset themselves while we were still sitting there. They reset themselves REALLY REALLY FAST!

  • very cool, what program did you use to make this animation?

  • After figuring out how it worked, I went on the ride and looked behind me and I realized the car never moves when it simulates backing up. You'll see the tunnel walls move too, but it's sort of dark so hard to really see. But if you sit in the front and look over the hood, you can see the bottom part of the wall being stationary while the cave canvas wall moving.

It took me a while to figure that out because I thought the car always backed up.

  • What program did you create these graphics in? Is it just a 2D pic animation? I want to try to do the same for a home made tower of terror design.

  • @rocketrod21 Sounds so wrong.

  • Bravo...nicely done

  • When the ride vehicle enters the room, the walls are still resetting back to the original spot making it seem like your driving much further into the "cave" than you actually are. If you've ever been walked off at this point, when you turn the corner into the "cave" your actually not very far from the drop. Or just turn around and look behind you. The room is pretty small for the effect.

  • so thats why it feels like your going backwards.

  • Looks like Jones hung himself lol

  • still a fun ride
