Its the look on his face right at the end; when he realises that after all that Alice will never love him... and now he's basically messed up his life :( I like his character a lot though and its a shame they didn't use him more throughout the series... I think he was in for about 3 episodes- 4 if you include 'The Trial': I disliked his redesign though towards the end of the cartoon...ewww

@100Batarangs Well, none of us are really saying we identify with him because of the pedophilia. In fact, thats really one of the only reasons hes such a good villain, because we can hate him for that fact. But at the same time, we can identify with his loneliness and longing to be loved, which is what makes him such a complex figure.

@100Batarangs They usually refer to the BTAS version as the one that they can relate to.

Fabulous! The only tweaking I would give it would be to leave in Hatter's last line "would not could not join the dance" I identified with Hatter's loneliness all too well as a teenager.

Blame Lewis Caroll for Hatter/Alice, because if it WEREN'T for his own lolita fetish with the real-life Alice Liddel--for whom the stories were written & who Lewis drew NAKED pictures of when she was a MINOR (i.e. a little girl)--Jervis (Batman villian) wouldn't have his wicked fantasy, the cast members who play the characters at the Disney theme parks (ex: Reggie as Hatter) would NOT be dating, & the film by Tim Burton would NOT have made allusions to the pairing.

I find it funny how lots of people say they relate to Jervis Tetch when he is a KNOWN paedophile in the Batman Universe. That's not even something I'm making up or assuming; IT'S FACT!
Still, he is my favourite villain so I'm not sure what that says about me...

Batman Villains.
More than one-sided bad guys, with their own, moving stories and personalities.
I relate to Jervis so much on a personal level, and I feel so sad for his story, and how he became pushed over the edge.
I live the story of Jervis Tetch. Its so sad. I love how he sems to light and happy, but underneath it all he's exceedingly devious and very very sad and lonely. A deadly combination and a complex personality.

I really like the Mad Hatter. And I really WANT to be able to like him with impunity: his story of loneliness, of unrequited love, is so human, so easy to identify with.
But he just isn't a good man. Him hiding his mind control device isn't just him being a shy little fellow antagonized by his boss... by allowing himself to be paid for work he's not doing for them, he's stealing from the company. And I bet he knows it.
Not to mention that whole brainwashing thing. But we all make mistakes.
