My thoughts: Gaenor is pretty tough indeed and most gamers may find him to be a jerk. In comparison, Fargoth seems more likable then Gaenor, and that's saying a lot. Being that Gaenor is tough even if your PC (player character) is maxed out at 100 points for all skills and attributes. It's due to his high strength of 155. His Luck soars high at 255, but with his "enchantment" Gaenor's Abilities, he gets 500 fortification to Luck in addition to his enchanted amulet he wears which boosts Luck further for a last 15 points. After adding this all up, Gaenor has Seven-Hundred-Seventy (770) Luck. This means he'll avoid your hits with ease, deal greater more random damage among other things! Other notable things are the fact his abilites help him to Resist Magicka 80-100% (80-99), Reflect 50-100% (50-99), and Restore Health 1 point (pts.). Having the health restoration means he will heal 1 point of health per second, so leaving for a day or several hours gametime even, he'll recover from whatever damage was inflicted. Difficulty is set at 50 above normal.

My strategy, Beat Up the Bosmer Punk:
I'm serious, go Jackie Chan on this guy, wail on him with jabs, punches, et cetera. Once you knock him down, take out a strong but somewhat heavy weapon and strike him. Doing this with most any weapon will deal major damage since he's down for the count. Just be sure to switch to Hand to Hand combat to knock him down again.

Secondary Strategy, Potion Abuse:
Sujamma (alcohol) is your friend, drinking even 12 will give a major boost to strength when every hit that connects, counts. Having some other fortify attribute potions is also recommended, especially anything that additionally boosts Agility and Luck. You'll definetely need it.

Third strategy, Indirect Assault:
Sometimes having superior mobilty and a range attack is best, using a potion of jump or getting on top of a rock somewhere in the area west side of the temple courtyard would work to your advantage. Outrun Gaenor to this high area, like the rock mentioned. Let your arrows or bolts fly while you slowly carve away at his health while he cannot get up to you to even make an attack. Some fortification in speed and athletics may be necessary to outrun Gaenor.

Quick Walkthrough
1. Speak to Gaenor in the Temple Courtyard
2. He will ask you for 50, 100, 1000, 10,000, and 1,000,000 gold in turn
3. Refuse or pay, it won't change the outcome
4. Gaenor will disappear, wait for two days
5. When you enter the Temple Courtyard, Gaenor will have returned
6. Slay the Bosmer for your reward

Notes
* If you try to kill him before he has a chance to leave, he's an interesting fight. He fights with hand-to-hand and does almost no damage, but Gaenor is still very difficult to hit and reflects a lot of magic cast at him. If you wanted to practice block and your armor skills, just attack him and watch the fun for a while. He may teleport before you can kill him.
* If you don't have the money, he will ask first for an Ebony short sword. If you provide him with one he will then ask for a complete set of Daedric armor. Offering him this, even if you have it, will produce similar results to offering 1,000,000 gold - he'll refuse to believe you have it and walk off in a huff.
* Anything you give him is pretty much gone for good - even after he attacks you and you kill him, you won't be able to get back anything you gave him. Thus it's probably best to just avoid giving him anything at all - the results are exactly the same either way, so giving him anything is just a waste.
* The BiPolar Blade, attainable in The MatchMaker quest, is a useful tool against Gaenor. When struck, he stops attacking you and merely walks about. Continuing to attack him at this point, however, with the BiPolar Blade or any other weapon, will count as assault and killing him will count as murder.
