This is the story of a driver who was in a real hurry--and decided to beat the railroad crossing gates. Although my video is fiction, look at the facts: 60% of all railroad crossing accidents occur during daylight hours, at crossings equipped with automatic warning devices, and within 25 miles of the motorist's home. A 150-car freight train traveling at 50 miles per hour, takes 1 1/2 miles to stop. An 8-car passenger train, traveling at 60 miles per hour, takes about 1 mile to stop.
Use your brains:
***Never drive or walk around railroad crossing gates or flashing red lights. And once the train has passed, don't cross the tracks until the gates are raised and the lights have stopped flashing. Since some rail crossings have several tracks, make sure there isn't a second train hidden after the first train.
*** Expect a train at any time. Not all trains run on a regular schedule.
*** Don't get trapped at a grade crossing (like in the video) until you're sure you can clear the tracks. Once you have started across the tracks, keep going!
*** If your vehicle stalls on a crossing, get everyone out and off the tracks immediately. If a train is coming, quickly move far away from the tracks.
***Use your brains and play it safe. Besides, I'd like you alive to keep watching my videos--and those of my friends! They're even better than mine!
By the way, since you're here, check out my channel page (by clicking on the icon or ibiubuok at the top of this column) to see if you're addicted to trains or model trains. (I'm thankful to "TSBYrailroad" who inspired this video, as well as "Bramptonrailfan" for his continued support. Check out their videos. I think you'll like them! Thanks for watching and please stop by again my channel!

HOW DID I NOT SEE THIS?!?! I would have commented much earlier if I knew you had posted a video. Do you use DCC? It looks like the headlight of the loco was on the whole time! Great video, Charlie, and best wishes from your pal!

It's DC. But you're right., the headlight is on. If you look REALLY hard, you'll notice an upside down thumb-tack to the left of the loco's front coupler that I used to stop it, while I took the shot. Then I moved the tack & took another shot. (The track power was low so the wheels wouldn't spin too much.) Thanks so much for stopping, looking, and for your kind words!
