Massasauga rattlesnakes are small in size and few in numbers in Missouri.
Also known as swamp rattlers, they prefer to live in marshes near flood plains of large rivers.
Because these types of habitat are disappearing, the number of massasaugas has been declining and they're listed as endangered in Missouri.
They are found only in a few isolated areas in the state.
Research to track the movement of these snakes will help to determine how to effectively manage the habitat for this endangered species.
There a lake behind my house, a little over ten acres back, and I've never seen one of these snakes but I've heard stories of 6-9 rattlesnakes found back there. It's all "bigfoot" stories to me. I've never seen one back there.

NICE! These are my favorite snake, I've been doing some work with them at a population near my home.
