@rbeuck I have that book actually, but thanks for the offer. I don't believe Eddie on that -- I think at that point in his career he was lying about a lot of stuff and I think he was trying to mislead people with that Wurlitzer comment. I appreciate the help though!

@VioletDeliriums Hey Violet ... if you like I can scan the page and email it to you.
and the mag cover too so that maybe you can find a copy on the web.

@DougFCKNSteele According to an interview w/ Eddie a good number of years
ago that sound is indeed a keyboard ... w/ at least one bad transistor. I do not recall
as to whether or not a flange was added although I always swore it sounded like
flanger to me. If I find the mag. w/ the interview I will let you know ... I may not have it anymore

@DougFCKNSteele That's what EVH says too, but you know how he used to BS so much back then. I think it might be pick scrapes with the phase 90 set about 10 oclock, similar to Atomic Punk. I think he likes to confuse people -- especially when he was younger. This revival in Van Halen I see is really fascinating. To learn this stuff in the 80s was a lot harder because there was no YouTube. But that might have actually helped guitarists actually listen and groove more than worry about technique.
Can you do the noise at the beginning? I would accept a fake solo more than a version without that noise. It seems to be one of his most guarded secrets -- he BSes in interviews about it and in a lot of live performances on YouTube have the lights go out at that point. I am not a Van Halen fan, but I am doing research on him, and what I find more interesting are the noises he makes than the "notes." One transcription says pick scrapes, Eddie says on the organ by bashing the keys. Do you know?

@VioletDeliriums I honestly think it's done with keyboards, there's definitely flanger on it. I would have no idea how tyou'd get that sound on guitar, the thing that would come close is what Ed does on Atomic punk, but it wouldn't be right.

@DougFCKNSteele Well, unbelievably to me, I found it ... Guitar World
Presents Guitar Legends - ( display until April 20, 1992 ). PAGE 31 Eddie
says he used an old Wurlitzer electric piano that he pumped through his
Marshall amps and , yes, he used an MXR Flanger.

@rbeuck I'd still like to know how he does it, like, how's he bangin' the keys?

@DougFCKNSteele Yeah Doug. According to what I have here it reads
" I just banged on the lower part of the keyboard - no notes, just a cluster
and switched on my MXR Flanger " Gleen from that what you will. Hey
man I just love your video clips - you have one helluva mastery. I never
learned much on the guitar. you inspire me to try again. ROCK ON
