An advisor to the Russian leader has accused Washington of financing and arming what he called Ukrainian militants.

Vladimir Putin's economic advisor said Russia had legal grounds to intervene in Ukraine's crisis as a senior, describing the situation there as an attempted coup. This, while an American official arrives in Ukraine's capital Kiev for crisis talks. Meanwhile, EU lawmakers have called for targeted sanctions against the Ukrainian government over its handling of the pro-EU protests. The demonstrations have continued in Russia's neighbor over the past couple of months. Protesters want President Viktor Yanukovych to stand down. Yanukovych has given some concessions to the opposition. But the protesters say they will accept nothing short of the president's resignation, after he scrapped a deal, which would have paved the way for Kiev to join the EU.
