Tennessee shiners, Notropis luceodus, spawning over a river chub nest in Copper Cr. , VA. These beautiful shiners rely on the presence of larger chubs and stonerollers that construct nests using small stones and pebbles. Tennessee shiners and other related species take advantage of these cleaned substrates to spawn en mass, usually changing from dull, silvery little minnows to brilliant red beauties!
While these fish are not rare, all substrate spawning fishes require streams and rivers that are relatively free from heavy silt loads.
