Inaugural Terre Haute Walk Now for Autism Raises $60,000
The Terre Haute Walk Now for Autism took place on Saturday, September 20 at Indiana State Universitys Memorial Stadium, raising $60,000. The 1,500 walkers followed a path in the shape of the state of Indiana that winds around the outside of the stadium, symbolically spreading autism awareness across the entire state.
Media Sponsor Mix 100.7 FM broadcast remotely from the Terre Haute Walk, which was ably emceed by deejay Bill Cain. Pre-Walk festivities included Terre Hautes Mayor, Duke Bennett, declaring September 20 as official Walk Now for Autism Day and the staff of Union Fitness Center leading participants in pre-Walk warm-ups. mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe, the mascot of Walk Now for Autism National Sponsor ToysRUs cut the ribbon to start the walk and Sparky the Dog, the mascot of the Terre Haute Fire Department, was on hand passing out Junior Firefighter hats and badges to young walkers.
The resource fair showcased 15 booths, including ToysRUs, which prominently displayed its autism related sensory toy line, The Bridges of Indiana, Community Alliance and Services for Young Children, Together in Autism and The Terre Haute Childrens Museum. A number of generous sponsors contributed to the success of the Terre Haute Walk Now for Autism, especially Bridges of Indiana, which served as a Silver Sponsor. Baeslers Market, Bemis Company and Duke Energy contributed as Community Investors. Special thanks to Walk Chairs Debbie Beard and Amy Walker for making the inaugural Terre Haute Walk such a success.
