Robin Williams Vs The Australian Prime Minister

Robin Williams said on David Letterman's US talk show (29,March,2010). that Australians are just "English rednecks" and the Australian Prime Minister (PM), Kevin Rudd, did not like the joke. Even the local Australian radio commentators told Robin that very likely only the PM was offended by, Williams took it in good spirit to the point of apologizing : "Mr Rudd I apologise," Williams replied.
"It's linguistics. I would like to modify my terminology and say 'English good old boy'.
Anyway, I like Robin Williams and respect our PM so I think that at the end it is just fun and the winner is the coming Australian movie : "Happy Feet 2" HaHa

Australia is a culturally diverse country and although you say that we might be 'racist'. Im sure that if others where put into the same living conditions they would understand that there are so many amazing nationalities and cultures. I live in a country town in NSW and have lived in Sydney and i find that both are culturally diverse and i have ran into 'bogans' and 'racists' but the majority of people are just friendly people who sometimes misunderstand another persons culture.

Yeah I'm aussie. The redneck characterisation is pretty accurate.

Oh yeah ... where I live, we don't like Muslims and wish they would get out of the country. Same with Indians.

So a bit racist too, but nobody will say it in public.

My personal phylosophy is not to stereotype and try to get along no matter the native nationality, I really believe in the Aussie giving a "Fair Go" ;). For instance I had an Indian neighboor who was nice and a very good friend. Of course, it must be some Indian bad eggs as well as in any nationality including born Australians lol. Now, I have not had any experience with muslims myself, so I do not have an example there . Have a G'Day :)

Australians are renowned for being able to laugh at ourselves...and I think the average person probably couldn't care less about the comments....I think this was an overreaction.... Robin Williams makes jokes about wherever he goes.

australians never say redneck, americans dont know anything about other countrys except for there own, and they think all we do is drink beer and have bbq's and say "g'day mate" and stuff like that all the time. i rarely see people ever having a bbq anymore and most people dont like the taste of beer.
