Karl Pilkinton is a great act, but it's still an act

Ricky, Steve and Karl repeat the "infinite monkey" problem in the ricky gervais show later on

    Brilliant though

It always gets me with the infinity thing - why didn't Ricky just tell Karl the monkeys would be pressing random keys on the typewriter, and eventually those random letters would form the words that form Shakespeare.

Then again, we probably wouldn't get the same humour from Karl's brain trying to work it out...

Ohhhh ok now I see what you're saying. I actually looked it up on wikipedia and the term that they use is that the monkeys will "almost surely" type the works of shakespeare. It's saying that even though the probability that they do is 1, that doesn't mean that it's impossible for them not to. It's like saying if I pick a random integer out of all integers, the probability I pick 10 is zero, but I could still pick 10. With all that said, Karl is still wrong.

what ricky says "if everything is random then they'll eventually type everything" is false, if you interpret this as meaning that with absolute certainty every possible string will occur.

what i mean about infinity is that mathematical statements which use the word "infinity" are only defined in other terms, so that saying something about infinity is really just a figure of speech. e.g. "tends to infinity" really means "grows without bound" really means "eventually exceeds every finite value"
