During the almost four years of Khmer Rouge rule in Cambodia, it's thought around 14,000 people were sent to the infamous S-21 prison in Phnom Penh.

Only a handful are known to have survived, among them artist Vann Nath.

Since 1979 he's made a living painting his own story of life under the Khmer Rouge.

He tells Al Jazeera his story.

  • POL POT LOOKIN UP NOT DOWN FOREVER IN HELL BEING TOTURED BY HIS MASTER SATAN

  • @roamingsoul80 Yes of course communists are pieces of shits, especialy for the fact that it was communist vietnam who made pol pot fall from power and who saved cambodia.

  • Communists are pieces of shit even shit are far more valuable than they are...

  • @JusufJan -------------->Yeah especially when it was COMMUNIST VIETNAM who disposed off Pol Pot......

  • @deonvan Too much nationalism no good. Pol Pot was a Cambodian. You say some Cambodians (artists) are superior to the Thai people, and others (Khmer Rouge leaders) are not? Both the artists and Pol Pot came from the same national group. Bottom line: you can judge people individually, but not by their nationality. No nationality is better than another, just like no individuals are better than another. I'm just saying...

  • YESSSS my whole family was in the khmer rouge except for my generation

  • Cambodian back then are so talent! Just look at that guy painting! It is bomb. Imagine if other talented khmer people back then still live now a day? There be anime creator, cambodian car, cambodian olympic, probably no disrespect but better than Thai and tie with Hong Kong! Thai would get jealous. compare to Khmer now day??? It sucks. No ideal people that you can think of in Khmer. I want to be proud of Khmer but I can't now a day. The stupid bitch Pol Pot MESSED EVERYTHING UP! Better Nation?

  • @Zamudiokid Though SBoy418SGirl didn't say it clearly I think that his grandfather was a general in Lon Nol's army.

  • What's in the world isn't art ?? even war is an art.
