"I'd like to be a queen of people's hearts, in people's hearts. I don't go by a rule book, because I lead from the heart, not the head, and albeit that's got me into trouble in my work, I understand that. But someone's got to go out there and love people and show it."
Princess Diana of Wales

The video excerpts are from the 1995 BBC interview with Princess Diana by Martin Bashir.

Thanks to CarpentersFan2003 for suggesting the concept for this video.

Karen and Diana, two lovely ladies, gone too soon!
We love and miss you, Karen and Diana!

A note: Palma Pascale who co-wrote the song with John Bettis, died September 8, 2009. Her rendition of this song can be heard here:

LOVE ME FOR WHAT I AM
(Words and music by John Bettis and Palma Pascale)

We fell in love
On the first night that we met
Together we've been happy
I have very few regrets
The ordinary problems
Have not been hard to face
But lately little changes
Have been slowly taking place
You're always finding something
Is wrong in what I do
But you can't rearrange my life
Because it please you

You've got to love me
For what I am
For simply being me
Don't love me
For what you intend
Or hope that I will be
And if you're only using me
To feed your fantasy
You're really not in love
So let me go
I must be free

If what you want
Isn't natural for me
I won't pretend to keep you
What I am I have to be
The picture of perfection
Is only in your mind
For all your expectations
Love can never be designed
We either take each other
For everything we are
Or leave the life we've made behind
And make another start

You've got to love me
For what I am
For simply being me
Don't love me
For what you intend
Or hope that I will be
And if you're only using me
To feed your fantasy
You're really not in love
So let me go
I must be free

And if you're only using me
To feed your fantasy
You're really not in love
So let me go
I must be free

You're really not in love
So let me go
I must be free

  • Ned, as all of them are, your video is wonderful.

A special thank you to you for your nod to the composer - Palma Pascale was one of my dearest friends, and I miss her incredibly, every single day....I really appreciate your posting the link to her video of Love Me For What I Am. I am trying to heighten the awareness of our sweet Palma because if more people KNEW of her own compositions and work, I know they would enjoy it tremendously, as I do.

    Thanks again, Ned!

  • I'm from the Philippines, and I must say England was so fortunate to have Princess Diana to have lived with them. She's a jewel -- shining for all of mankind.

  • @edar43 Hi Edar... the idea for this video was mine however Ned gave it the kiss of life. Everytime I heard this song I always thought of the Late Princess of Wales and how much it mirrors her disaster of a marriage to Prince Charles. I am a Monarchist but I will admit freely that the Royal family used Diana as "Breeding stock.." and even she understood that she had two duties to prefrom. Provide an Heir and Spare... Sad think was at the beginning she loved Charles..

  • This is so LOVELY!!! Perfect for our Princess of Wales, you are always in our heart!!! You gave so much to ENGLAND!!!!!

  • Riche ou pauvre .......on est tous égaux devant l'amour ...Heureusement .

  • Ned, this is a perfect work! Carpenters and Karen's voice are perfect as always, and this song fits perfectly with Princess Diana Story. The sad and true thing is they didn't let her free. Diana looked so sad in many photos...

  • I really love princess Dianne, i am sad for her.

  • She won't go quietly, I will fight till the end, thats the problem. So they had her killed because what else could they do. They made it look like an accident and got away with murder. I believe that and nothing will change my mind that they took this beautiful woman and mother away from us. I am still in pain RIP my beautiful queen of hearts.

  • Beautiful Video
