This is a 20x sped up version of a video YouTube user tomano252 uploaded showing the effect of the tsunami hitting the coast of California.

You can see why they have been called "tidal waves", though they are not tidal in nature, this small tsunami looks as if the tide has gone in and out, but in ten minutes rather than twelve hours.

The trough of the wave arrives before the crest, so water runs out before it rushes in. This is because nature is a jerk and wants people to run out into the unusually dry ocean before swamping them with a big wave.

This particular beach is called "bowling ball beach" because of the uniform large boulders strewn about it.
