Terry Laughlin, David Barra and Willie Miller completed a simultaneous solo crossing (as opposed to a relay crossing) of the 9 mile Maui Channel swim in 4 hours and 55 seconds. Our boat captain told us that they beat the record time previously set by a relay of 6 people. I (Fiona Laughlin) swam from the boat to the shore with the underwater camera to capture the finish, just in time for them to climb out of the surf. After we swam back to the boat and sailed towards the bay a pod of what was estimated by our boat captain as about 150 Spinner Dolphins came cruising by jumping and spinning into the air for a magical close to our day.

  • Nice swim...nice dolpins...but not the record.

The six person relay best time is from 2005 = 2:51.

The solo swim best time is from 2002 = 3:10.45

You can check the results out at the maui channel swim website

  • Congrats on the record gents. You don't get dolphins like that in the The Channel.

  • Congrats on the record! The dolphins were cool!
