Walls • Three

Selena wandered into the small café slash bakery and smiled as she inhaled the sweet scent of cinnamon and a bunch of other things. She had just eaten, but she was craving a red velvet cupcake, so she walked up to the counter and got in line. There were about two people in front of her and two more suddenly came out of nowhere.

She felt a tap on her shoulder so she turned around and saw a girl her height staring back at her with bright green eyes. "Hi," she said with a genuine smile plastered on her face. "Are you new here?" Her hair fell down in long dirty blonde locks and ended just near her mid chest.

Her lips were covered in a light pink gloss and she had snow covered on her gray UGGS which indicated that she had just come into the store.

Selena nodded slightly and smiled back at her to be polite. "Yeah, why?" she asked.
"Just asking," the girl replied. "I just haven't seen you around and your hair is super gorgeous!" She stared at it for a second and then looked back at Selena in the eye. "Are the streaks permanent?"

Selena nodded once again, "Thank you," she murmured, not knowing what else to say. It was her turn at the counter and she ordered two red velvet cupcakes, one packed to go for her dad since they used to blow them out on her birthday every year.

"Are you going to eat here?" the blonde girl asked. "Because I'd love company," she said.
"Yeah, sure. I don't have anywhere else to go. I'll go save a seat for you?" she asked.

The girl nodded. "I'm Amy, by the way."

"Selena," a small smile appeared on her lips, "I'll be over there."

She went to go sit down at a table and opened up her cupcake, taking a small bite out of the sweet sponge cake. She licked a bit of the cream cheese icing off and smiled, thinking about her past. Amy had come back and they had begun to talk. Selena found out that she went to her school and was in the same grade as her, and everybody knew everybody in this small town. While she continued talking, Selena's gaze wandered across the room and stopped at the corner, at a table where a couple of boys were seated. One of them was staring right at her, and she didn't find this uncomfortable because she had seen the light caramel brown orbs before.

"And who's he?" she asked, looking back at Amy.

Amy smiled without even looking at where Selena was looking. "I had a feeling you were staring at him. His name's Justin, he's single, but he barely gets in relationships. The last time he had one was two months ago, and I don't think it ended well." She leaned in across the table, "He just never opens up to anyone," then sat back straight. "If I were anyone else, I would tell you that you don't have a chance, but, from the looks of it, I think you do."

This surprised Selena. "What do you mean?"

"When I came into the café, I saw him looking at you. Almost as if he was observing you. It was kind of cute, in a creepy way."

This made her smile for some reason, but she refused to look his way. She knew if she caught him staring at her, or the other way around, that her cheeks would turn a deep shade of red and that would be bad.

"But, hey! Enough about him. You still need to be introduced to town before you start school with us on Tuesday. Sooo," she chirped, taking a sip of her hot chocolate. "Got any plans for New Year's?"

Selena shook her head. She also remembered her dad having plans that night of his own. "I don't think so, why?"

"There's gonna be a New Year's party at a lodge, cabin type of place. It's two floors and really huge. People host parties there for special gatherings. We booked it for us, and by we, I mean ages 14-21. How old are you?"

"Not 21 and not 14," Selena replied laughing. "I'm seventeen."

"Great," she replied with a big smile across her face. "Wear something nice, sexy even, and I'll pick you up?"

Selena glanced at Justin and then back at Amy. This was her chance to make new friends and possibly even get to know this boy a little more, why would she refuse? She gave a slight nod to Amy, moving her gaze away from the boy.
