Giraffes watching a wild opossum. Zoo animals, like any other animals, are alert and curious. Here a group of giraffes are very curious about a wild opossum that wondered by. They had probably never seen one and wondered whether it was a friend or a predator. The opossum didnt seem concerned. Maybe it thought they were trees.
One giraffe even nodded its head at the opossum. This is a common gesture or signal signal used by many animals. It may be a greeting, signal of non aggression, or help the animal see another animal.
These are Maasai giraffes, the worlds tallest animals. They have good eyesight, a clear view from on high, and can detect predators from a great distance. The tallest giraffe stood almost 20 feet high, which is equal to a several story building, and they can weigh as much as 2,600 lbs. . They are an even toed ungulate mammal related to deer and cattle but placed in a separage family Giraffidae, which consists of the giraffe and the okapi.
Its name, camelopardalis (camelopard) is derived from its Roman name, describing it as having characteristics of both a camel and a leopard. Each giraffe has in individual coat pattern. Both females and males have horns. Males sometimes neck. They can delivr hard blows with their neck.
The Opossum, Didelphis virginiana, is North Americas only marsupial. It carries its young in a pouch.
