  • Not black enough

  • @12rosebud12 There's no need to insult Classical pianists. Their artistry is just as great as jazz. This guy is not Tatum....he lacks the passion and finesse. And I think that he plays this music like a difficult Chopin Etude. But, I bet he plays one mean Chopin Etude. And Art Tatum plays one mean Tiger rag. No one could do it like Art. In case you didn't know, Horowitz was an awe of Tatum. And Tatum was in awe of Horowitz. Two very different styles. But one could learn to appreciate both.

  • He's got great technic and shows it well. How can anybody not appreciate this for what it is. Of course nobody's Art Tatum, but Nobody is Oscar, Cavallaro, or Garner either. Keep up the good work Steve. I would love to hear this at a Philharmonic Concert right after one of your Concerti!

  • that left hand is flying

  • Fun to watch, wish I could see a video of Art Tatum playing it. I'll keep looking.

  • casi se desmaya al final ja, ja.

  • @16yearoldwhiteboy Nobody's perfect. Just enjoy the video.

  • This is hugely talented and skilled playing, demonstrating excellent technique, and runs which to my ears are smoother than Tatum's. All pianists have their own sound, and you can't reasonably expect a virtuoso pianist with Steven Mayer's technique to be simply a musical chameleon. He is instead entitled to play the notes his way, and I for one welcome the alternative sound he creates.

  • And sorry but anybody with a lot of practice can't tackle Tiger Rag (or really any Tatum song). Not to be disagreeable, but i think hardly anyone can complete any of his songs. Oscar Peterson himself admitted that he could hardly even play any Art Tatum run and he practiced for hours upon end every day. Albeit, Oscar eventually became a total virtuoso, due to his great practicing techniques. I believe if we put the worth ethic into it, along w/ some natural talent, amazing things can happen
