hickstead, you are and always will be, one in a million.

thank you for all the lessons you've taught this sport. it wasn't time for you to go, but in your short time here you taught the world invaluable lessons. you and eric gave hope to millions of people, the millions of people who feel like the underdog. at one point, you were the underdog. you were little, and no one expected you to be able to jump what you were capable of. you were feisty, and most people wouldn't have given you the chance. but through it all, eric gave you a chance. he believed in you. in a lot of ways, he was the underdog too. he came out of a bad childhood, but he turned it around. together, you were unbeatable. together, you defied the odds, broke through the walls people had built up around you, never expecting that you would leap over them. you shocked the world.

you taught everyone that each and every horse deserves a chance. maybe at first, it doesn't seem like it will ever work, but if you keep believing, keep trying hard enough, it will happen.

together you and hickstead became a legend. it was you that showed the world that a bond that strong is unbreakable, and can overcome any obstacle. the underdog can end up on top. in a spot like this, it often times seems difficult and overwhelming to go against such odds. having an icon to look up to, one as great as the two of you, gives hope to millions out there who just might need that little extra push to get started.

just because it seems unlikely doesn't mean it can't happen. it is one of the most important lessons a person could ever learn, and hickstead, you are living proof that it can happen, if you have enough heart.

you sent crowds erupting into cheers, and you brought the world of show jumping together. the world was silenced the day we lost you. thank you for everything you've taught us, you truly are the greatest horse to ever set foot on this earth, and we are all lucky that we were able to witness you in action.

you're now up in a better place, watching over us all.
