Understanding and Preventing Urban Youth Violence. In this segment, Derrick Russell shares his personal story of struggling to find his way as a teenager overly exposed to violence, gangs, and negativity. He describes how he is working now to help youths blaze a new path and avoid the pain he has experienced in his life. After his release from federal prison in 2007 Derrick has devoted his life to end the violence in his community. He founded Listen Good Youth and has been reaching out to young people as often as he can. Derrick was joined on the panel by Dr. Deanna Wilkinson, OSU Associate Professor; Steve Curl, regional director of the Ohio Department of Youth service parole authority, Jason Jenkins recruits African American mentors for Big Brothers/Big Sisters; and Tamara Fournier, author and program director at Trinity Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio.
