Presentation of the Haiku Operating System. It's an open source reincarnation of BeOS.

edit: I have uploaded a video of a much newer revision here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqGbRJailRA

  • Haiku should be even better at the end of the summer. They have been accepted into the Google Summer of Code so hopefully that will push things along nicely.

  • Thanks for the comment but I can't read it :?

  • Sorry, I'll post in English. I've tried a BeOS version called Zeta Yellowtab. It hanged during installation in my computer, but I installed in a computer of my university. It was in black and white and without sound, because I hadn't the drivers and I didn't have time to configure it, the network worked properly.

  • YellowTAB gave the development of ZetaOS to a company called Magnusoft now. I was able to get it to run in MS Virtual PC 2004 so you might want to give that a try. Zeta is actually more functional than Haiku. The Zeta guys used a lot of the open source code from Haiku.

  • Haiku Operating system is based on BeOS, which for it time was far more advanced the Windows, MAC OSX and Linux. the way it handles Preemptive-Multitasking, and thread processing, it could have pwnd Windows, if only it had a larger user-base, and a easier to program API. I guess the OS can still suck but as long as there is a multitude of Applications and a good API e.g. (Win32 and DirectX) it will keep the user happy, like Windows per say.

  • Ubuntu is just a customised version of Debian...

  • You need internet connection to download the wireless internet software?! WTF?! Haiku, you are gay.

  • @stonebob Actually it's its own Linux-based operating system.

  • i was thinking of trying this anyone know if it has a support group?

  • love how all these OS videos show off eye candy stuff instead of what truly makes an OS unique.

  • @TengriAsura It has to be a perfect clone of BeOS and everything works the same way it did in Be. I hope the drivers works the same so those like myself with R5 can use them.

  • Music is Musikk feat John Rock - Summer Lovin

  • So you are saying, if Gassee and Be would have asked for twice less, they would have been in the game? Come on, 2x pay cut should have been done then. Although I like the current MacOS :)

Also, BeOS was written entirely in C++, and linux in C.

  • Apple (gilio amelio) would buy BeOS for $125m, where they wanted $200m. finnally they would be bought by PALM for $20m.

Apple would pay $400 million to buy Jobs's company NeXT.

Modern OS'es still lacks some features of beos, thought, NeXT OS is was a superior os, because of its strong Object Oriented api's, its network and printing capabilities. Everything projected on the screen is post-script-aware. This is crucial for media&printing industries. But BeOS instead would be a perfect server OS.
