There is a lot of debate about whether garlic keeps fleas away, though some studies show that people with higher concentrations of garlic in their blood get bitten less by fleas. Consider feeding larger pets garlic to prevent fleas, but only under vet supervision, with advice from a sustainable gardener in this free video on pest control.

My golden retrievers do just fine eating garlic. I add 2 cloves minced into their dog food. Prevents fleas and mosquitoes. I'm not sure about ticks, since we don't have them in my city. Garlic prevents heart disease and cancer in people, maybe it can do the same for dogs as well.

I put minced garlic in my dogs dogs food if I notice a flea problem or he starts scratching and biting, feed it to him and he stops scratching and moaning! I only do it when he seems uncomfortable not all the time, like you said you don't want to give them TOO MUCH!
