Forklifts sometimes called Lift Trucks are a common sight in many workplaces, and often make the lifting and transporting of goods and materials much easier and safer. But without good safety practices and procedures in place forklifts can be very dangerous. In fact, forklifts are a leading cause of workplace deaths and injuries.

A loaded forklift can weigh many tonnes, and do a lot of damage in the event of an accident. In addition, they are frequently less stable than many other vehicles.

This comprehensive forklift safety program covers:

•The main causes of Forklift Accidents
•Pre-Operational Checks
•Operational Checks
•Getting on and off
•Load Handling
•Picking up a load
•Setting down a load
•Fault discovery
•Speed and Stopping Distances
•Traffic Management and Pedestrian Traffic

The objective of this program is to highlight the importance of operating Forklifts safely and by so doing, increase awareness of the standards for worker responsibility in observing and being active in daily safety procedures.

  • @colliecandle I work as a foreman in a plant where hi-vis vests are a requirement. This is for when operators are off their machines and other forklift operators can see them. As far as common sense goes, these are two words that I discourage people from using. One operators common sense can be vastly different from another operator, especially when it comes to newly trained yet inexperienced operators.

  • How many people EVER check their car tyres let alone fork lift trucks! And the hi vis vests! - what are THEY going to do to save you an accident?

Two words are ALL thats needed for safe operationin ANY situation - COMMON SENSE!

  • @MrMadviking no the problem is that common sense isn't all that common.

  • lmao, my work breaks almost every one of these rules

the tires on the forklifts at my work have shit stuck in them, or chunks missing... CHUNKS of solid rubber missing.

we usually drive into or over pallets full of stuff... not like over them but like the edge of the pallet.. were backing up.. beep beep beep CRACK.. lol pallets.. *forward some, to try and go 90*

half the lights are gone... the horn is gone.. we dont use the seatbelts. but overall.. were pretty safe because were not retarded.

  • Good information people sometimes do not realize how dangerous a forklift can be. Thanks for sharing!

  • @Engineer9736 forklift without an ovehead guard? unlikely.

  • Awesome

  • @colliecandle wearing Hi-Vis is common sense when working around forklifts. I myself am a forklift driver and have a few times now come close to colliding with people who were not wearing the required Hi-Vis clothing.

  • @colliecandle totally agreed mate, however.....common sense???.....it aint very common pal

  • Its required at my job to do a check on a forklift before using. We even have to turn in a sheet.

  • Around fork lifts I like to use what I call the bucket rule. When I'm driving I assume everybody else has a bucket on their head and can't see me and I drive accordingly. When I'm walking and someone else is driving I assume they have a bucket on their head and can't see me and I walk accordingly.
