This week, I nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the U.S. Court of Appeals to replace Justice David Souter, who is retiring after nearly two decades on the Supreme Court. After reviewing many terrific candidates, I am certain that she is the right choice. In fact, there has not been a nominee in several generations who has brought the depth of judicial experience to this job that she offers.

Judge Sotomayors career began when she served as an Assistant District Attorney in New York, prosecuting violent crimes in Americas largest city. After leaving the DAs office, she became a litigator, representing clients in complex international legal disputes. She was appointed to the U.S. District Court, serving six years as a trial judge where she presided over hundreds of cases. And most recently, she has spent eleven years on the U.S. Court of Appeals, our nations second highest court, grappling with some of the most difficult constitutional and legal issues we face as a nation. She has more experience on the federal bench than any incoming Supreme Court Justice in the past 100 years. Quite simply, Judge Sotomayor has a deep familiarity with our judicial system from almost every angle.

And her achievements are all the more impressive when you consider what she had to overcome in order to achieve them. Judge Sotomayor grew up in a housing project in the South Bronx; her parents came to New York from Puerto Rico during the Second World War. Her father was a factory worker with a third grade education; when she was just nine years old, he passed away. Her mother worked six days a week as a nurse to provide for her and her brother, buying the only set of encyclopedias in the neighborhood and sending her children to Catholic school. Thats what made it possible for Judge Sotomayor to attend two of Americas leading universities, graduating at the top of her class at Princeton University, and studying at Yale Law School where she won a prestigious post as an editor of the schools Law Journal.

These many years ...

  • Who told you this?

    The MinuteMan sites?

    Free Republic?

There are thousands of stable and historic Latinos communities all across America. The majority of people with Spanish surnames in America are loyal citizens who have lived here for generations.

You seem to want to lump them all into "illegals". Even the millions who are awaiting immigration hearing that have been delayed for decades want desperately to remain Americans.

  • they're just trying to get latino votes for obama's next term. lol, watch her video where she says she is a product of affirmative action...anyone who is for affirmative action doesn't need to be in this kind of position. it's basically a racist idea. picking one person over another because of their race not based on their merits.

  • Yes, this creep rushed one justice to retire to put in his place this replacement: Sotomayor

    1. Who lied to the Congress with the same phrase as similar one before her: "it is settled issue" about 2nd amendment;

    2. Who refuses to read English language in a company of other 3 justices, and insists that "right to bear arms" written in plain English .

Like it or not, but the amendment does say what it says.

Think of voting this royal hand kissing unamerican nonsense out of office!

  • The truth is the truth and if she is going to give preferential treatment to Latinos versus non-Latinos is just as bad as anyone who gives preference to any group over another. That is fine as a citizen, although unAmerican, but it is not fine for a lifetime judgeship appointment. She should treat all people equally.

  • puerto ricans are dmb, they good singers and baseball players..thats all

  • This guy has been in office only a few months and I am already sick of his shit.

  • Sorry to say this.

    Rape Obama!

  • Oh Nelly! Who are you guys?

Oh yeah, tell me more about what you think of Latinos and Blacks. You guys all seem to be experts on groups other than your own.

    "gullible Latinos will"

    "many Latinos will..."

    "many Latinos that are racist..."

"...hispanics in the USA do not want to become Americans..."

Couple of you seem to think that every brown skinned person you see is an "illegal".

Bahahahahaa! Their people have been here since the 1500's. When did your family get here?

  • Politics as usual. If you watched the Roberts hearing or the Alito hearing or the Thomas hearing's, then you know what politics and posturing is.
