A series of Turkish songs recorded in America by Greek immigrants in the 1920s. Marika Papagika was from the island of Kos (born when it was still Ottoman), Achilleas Poulos, who recorded mostly in Turkish, was from Bursa (maybe Bandirma), Amalia Baka was a Greek speaking Romaniote Jew from Yanina, Epiros who was known as Kyria Amalia in her earlier recordings, M. Cazes sang for most of the recordings by the Stamboul Quartet whose members were mostly Sephardic or Romaniote Jews. Most immigrants from the then Ottoman Empire were non-Moslem, but had a shared musical culture with Moslem Turks, especially urban music.

  • Despite all the trouble between Greeks and Turks, we are brothers, and we have influenced eachother for the better

    Cheers

  • It's funny how our countries create an atmosphere of war and small groups cause trouble, declaring national superiority, while our cultures have been fused together in so many ways.

It's always nice to see there are people on the other side of the Aegean who let the differences slide and enjoy the results of centuries' old traditions.

Thank you guys, may peace be with you. :)

  • There is nothing like "Ottoman Greek"... stop that crap, Turks just nostalgate that time because they repressed others and where the bosses themselves... its clear it was a perfect time for them. But Greeks and many others suffered a lot until they could finally get rid of that joke...

  • The Balkan would have been a beautyful, prosperous place if those retarded Barbars wouldnt have ruined it for 400 years...

  • Beautifull!!!

  • First song is about Canakkale ! The Turkish song about the war of independence in Canakkale.

  • @tinibeeny82 now that was not the type of answer i was expecting from a greek like yourself. We have to crush down the prejudices between our nations if we are to establish a mutually beneficial relationship and look forward to a more peaceful future.

  • Great video !

  • Thankyou for your wonderful presentation of such wonderful music treasures!!!!

  • The whole Balkan is Ottomanic after 500 years of devşirme... Just wonder what music would have been made if Balkans and Anatolian peninsula weren't conquered by Ottomans.
