Fewer delays? Better gas mileage? Can a roundabout really do that? Find out here.

  • lol, Traffic lights can control the traffic flow just fine, also, if your adding roundabouts in Washington state, then your starting to act like UK

  • @photopuppet Think you might wanna google what 'anecdotal evidence' means. What you are saying is completely anecdotal. Statistically roundabouts ARE safer, and there are a multitude of reasons why a roundabout might be removed; it could be those particular roundabouts were poorly situated and impeded traffic rather than let it flow; or it could be an aesthetic choice? I just find it silly to suggest ALL roundabouts are bad just because your local council is removing a few.

  • @TheSestren I guess they're so safe around here that the council are now replacing at least three roundabouts I know of with standard intersections. ;) Also, the evidence that they're dangerous for at least certain groups of road users (such as the bicycle culture the country is trying to foster) is certainly not anecdotal. I repeat again - America, don't make the same mistake. You only have a few thousand of the things and still time to get rid of them. :P

  • @photopuppet No, it doesn't make them safer. What you are stating is anecdotal - just because you experienced something in a particular way, doesn't make it true across the board. Roundabouts definitely have more pros than cons.

  • @TheSestren Nope, it's dangerous because of all the idiot drivers you get where I live, flying around them like rockets, not giving way, etc. I notice the overall level of driving quality is better in the mid-west USA where i've visited, which probably makes them safer.

  • @photopuppet A roundabout is only dangerous if you have poor grasp of the highway code. ;)

  • @jeepers2655 That's multi-lane roundabouts that break up motorway (highway) traffic; single lane roundabouts as featured in this video never have them. Least not here in the UK.

  • The only ones who benefit from roundabouts are cars. It's worse for pedestrians and much worse for bikes. In fact it's nearly impossible for bikes to get through a roundabout safely unless the bike is walked.

  • yeah.......but i see some countries that have these, have signals at the Round a bout also!.......so there is a FAIL!

  • @NipkowDisk Yes, this is a good video. However, if "older folks" know how to "turn right after yielding", then they more or less know how to use a roundabout.
