A simple method of flash-heating breast milk infected with HIV successfully inactivates the virus, according to a new study led by researchers at UC Berkeley and UC Davis. In this video, Kiersten Israel-Ballard, a doctoral candidate at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health, demonstrates the process that could one day stop the transmittance of HIV from a nursing mother to her child. I have hand expressed milk and I know others who have done it.. its a technique that takes practice and.. time. I also did the 5+ extra boilings a day as my child had latch issues that led to infections in me that took months to heal. Pumping out is not for the faint hearted but then again either is giving birth. Put simply I believe that mothers who want the very best for their child will stop at nothing.

So what a mother with HIV should do is just pump and flash-heating the breast milk, it depends on the amount, store it in refrigerator or freezer. Then whenever the mom needs to breast milk, all she has to do is warm it. That would be nice, even here in the U.S because mothers are not breast feeding cause of risk of transmission through breast milk. They can breast milk and use formula at the same time because from breast milk the baby can benefits enormously including antibodies/ IgA..

i acutally used to hand express ALL THE TIME. everytime i did, i would get atleast 8 oz in ten min, if you have a breastpump, you can use a flange as a funnel in a bottle. there is no dought that this procedure could kill the good proteins in the milk, but it would HAVE to be better than formula. and if you are interested in what is best for your baby, you will find time to do this, my baby stopped latching on, i had to pump for 6 months, 12 times a day to feed my baby.

I live in South Africa, and I have a lot to do with the people. Your method might be easy enough, but the chances that they will use it? Rather slim. Wait until you see the squatter camps where they live. The hours that they have to work.

I strongly doubt this will be a method they actually use.
